The Delta Government says it has approved of N7bn for the removal of obstacles from the runway in Asaba International Airport.
State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chike Ogeah, disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday after the State Executive Council meeting in Government House in Asaba.
Ogeah said that the contract totaling N7.4bn was re-awarded to three different construction companies to ensure timely completion of the project before the South-South Economic Summit slated for April 26 to April 28.
He said that the contract was part of the initial amount approved for the construction of the airport.
Ogeah said that the airport authorities demanded that until the hills around the runway were levelled bigger aircraft would not be guaranteed to land at the airport.
The commissioner said that government also approved N2.3bn as compensation for property that fall within the right of way of making the Ughelli-Asaba Road a dual carriage way.
He said that N1.1bn was also approved for the renovation and rehabilitation five primary and secondary schools in Warri, Issele-Uku and Asaba.
“The exco also approved N748m for the construction of a workshop and lecture blocks at the School of Marine Technology in Burutu in Delta,’’ he said.
Ogeah said that approvals were given for the construction of road projects in various communities across the state, adding that mobilisation had been paid to some of the contractors handling those projects.
