Golf Independence Tourney: Arik Air Preaches Peace, Unity

As part of the goodwill messages for Nigeria’s 53rd Independence Day celebration, the chairman, Arik Air International, Sir Joseph Arumemi-Ikhide, has urged Nigerians to embrace peace and unity in order to move the nation forward. The Arik Air boss, who made this plea at the tee-off ceremony of the 2013 Golf Independence day tournament at the IBB golf and country club sponsored by Arik Air yesterday, noted that it is an honour to be given the opportunity to sponsor such event on such historic day in the history of Nigeria.
Speaking on the amount of funds invested in the tournament, Arumemi-Ikhide stated that there is no amount of money that is too much to be spent on the celebration of a country’s independence; especially in a game like golf where people from different parts of the world come to partake in.
He however charged the National Sports Commission, NSC and the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF on the need to patronise local products and services noting that it is an embarrassment to the nation for a country like Nigeria to be going for an international competition against Ethiopia aboard an Ethiopian airline.
Earlier, the representative of the Vice President, Senator Isaiah Balat stated that the massive sponsorship of the event by Arik Air is highly commendable and urged the Nigerian official airline to keep up with the good work it is doing and always come to the rescue of sports events in Nigeria. While expressing gratitude for the support of Arik Air, Captain of the IBB club, Olateju Debo pledged to make the airline the official carrier of the IBB club and country home.
The golf tournament is a yearly event and as part of this year’s programme, competitions started September 17, for the residents in the Country home and the workers in the club house in order to give them the opportunity of experiencing what has been going on around them. The event, which included golf, with more than 220 golfers who participated; and tennis, with 22 players participating in singles, masters, veterans and professionals; kicked off with a pre-tourney cocktail on Monday.
